Ultrasound Technologist Training

An Ultrasound Technologist is a diagnostic medical professional who specializes in ultrasonic imagery for diagnosis. Sound waves are able to capture images, scans and videos of anatomy, which are then for the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions.

An Ultrasound Technologist has a number of responsibilities, the main one being the handling and operating of complex ultrasonography equipment, explaining the procedure to patients while maintaining them in a position that will obtain the best imagery results.  The technologist would ensure the correct sound frequencies are selected to create the image.  An Ultrasound Technologist would then be required to select the best images for review by the physician, as well as maintain the relevant patient records for the ultrasound.
As a senior member of the diagnostic imaging department, an Ultrasound Technologist may also be responsible for the evaluation and purchase of equipment.

What does training involve?

Although it is not a legal requirement to register with the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, it is often beneficial to do this prior to searching for employments as are better opportunities for certified Ultrasound Technologists. As is the case in any industry, there are certain expectations of educational qualifications, even if they’re not a legal requirement. The reality is you are far more likely to be employed if you have a formal qualification.

To become a qualified Ultrasound Technologist, students must complete a training program at a university, hospital or college that provides a course accredited by the CAAHEP – the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. A background in healthcare is often an advantage to be selected for these training programs, although is not essential.

Ultrasound Technologist training programs can be completed after either 2 or 4 years depending on the qualification required.  After 2 years graduates obtain an associate’s degree, and after the 4-year training program, graduates obtain a bachelor’s degree.
During training program, students will acquire a great deal of knowledge of technology, anatomy and physiology and pathology required for their chosen career as Ultrasound Technologists.

Tuition and examination fees:

The associated costs for tuition and exams for qualifying as an Ultrasound Technologist vary according to whether you choose to qualify with an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree, and where in the US you choose to train, whether training is completed in a hospital, training center or college. Bear in mind that in most cases Ultrasound Technologist degree programs at community colleges are likely to be significantly less than the programs at four-year colleges.

From across the board, an accredited Ultrasound Technologist training program can cost anything from around $3,000 at the bottom end of the scale, right up to $30,000 at the highest point.

Whatever path you decide on to pursue your career as an Ultrasound Technologist, it is a field that has a very bright future, with employment opportunities within the sector set to increase by up to 18% within the next few years, according to stats from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.
