Ultrasound Technologist Schools

The field of ultrasound technology is a solid one. It pays well and the demand for professionals is expected to grow pretty steadily over the next seven years. The educational requirements for ultrasound technologists vary based on who’s doing the hiring. However, most employers will require that a prospective employee have an associate’s degree from an accredited (CAAHEP: Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) ultrasound program.

In order to be accepted into an accredited ultrasound program, it will often be necessary to either have an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related major. Individuals that don’t have either have the option of attaining one or the other or enrolling in a non-accredited school. There are both advantages and disadvantages associated with the latter. We’ll discuss what some of those are below.

The main advantage associated with enrolling in a non-accredited ultrasound technology program is that it is possible to so without an associate’s or bachelor’s degree. The primary disadvantages associated with non-accredited programs include the inability to attain employment (most employers will not hire someone whose training was obtained at a non-accredited program) and the necessity of working nearly 2000 tech hours before being allowed to sit for their ARDMS (American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography). Because jobs can be tough to come by for someone who has been trained at a non-accredited school, obtaining the hours necessary to sit for the ARDMS can be tough, which further prolongs an individual’s ability to earn an acceptable wage.

Ultrasound technology is a very important and demanding job. The training required to become an ultrasound radiologist is equally so. The technology is often used to diagnose ailments and for obstetrical imaging. Not knowing how to properly use the machinery or how to protect patients can result in all sorts of problems, including possible misdiagnosis or serious, physical harm.

When a person is considering ultrasound technology schools, they will find that there are a number of options available to them. A local school, if available, will be the right choice for some people. Online schools are another, often times, good option. These tend to be very convenient, especially when a person doesn’t have a lot of time to travel to and from class. Online schools offer more flexibility and typically allow individuals to study and complete tasks on their own time.

An accredited, ultrasound technology program that will prepare an individual to pass their board exams (ARDMS) is the best path to a degree in this field. Individuals should be confident that the school they choose will put them in the best position possible to do so.
